House Plant Success - Research Your Plant Choices Well

by Keith Markensen

The natural benefits of plants in an office or home are many. They provide a great decorative touch to those lonely stretches of unpopulated floor, table or desk space, they improve the air quality of the room, and have a naturally uplifting presence that calms and soothes those who look upon them.

These are but a few of the reasons why every home and office space should be outfitted with any number of plants. Yet before you go turning your home into a leafy, jungle paradise that oozes atmosphere you should observe the following pointers and tips on some of the plant varieties you may feel inclined to add to your abode.

Firstly, as beautiful and innocent as most plants appear, many have an unknown danger lurking in the tips of its leafy tendrils that can potentially be very dangerous or even deadly to both animals and children. Some plants when consumed or even touched can cause severe illness. One of most popular poisonous plants is ivy, with philodendron another popular choice that is potentially harmful.

Any household that includes children and/or pets either living there or visiting even infrequently needs to have its plant life chosen with care. Researching beforehand the potential dangers a plant may hold, the symptoms they are likely to cause upon consumption, and the quickest and most effective remedy should that occur are all vital. Maintaining constant supervision over children and pets in areas where these plants exist is important, though ensuring they’re out of reach is even more so.

Kids are ingenious though, and if that pretty plant catches their eye, you can be sure they’ll devise a clever way to reach it and take a closer look, so don’t let your guard down even when you feel a plant is out of their reach.

Aside from the potential dangers of plants, when choosing any plant for your home it’s important to identify which area of the house that plant will reside, and the amount of sunlight it is likely to receive there. Hiding a plant that requires plenty of sunlight in a dark corner will ensure it does develop well, though you can remedy this by moving it into a sunny spot for at least a few hours each day. Putting your indoor plants outdoors for a few hours on nice days is a great way for them to get sunlight and air.

Another factor that can influence plant growth is the temperature of the room or area it’s located in. Some plants thrive in warmer climates, while others may require cooler temperatures. Most need a nice moderate environment though, so if you stick it in a cool basement, or a stifling room in the summer, they may not grow as desired.

As a general rule of caring for house plants - flowering plants will require more sunlight to feed their growth than other types of plants. Tropical plants will do better in an environment with moist air, while cacti will thrive in the areas with dry air, those resilient plants should be able to survive even in conditions not ideally suited to them.

Silk Flowers- as Good as the Real Thing

by John Bear

Nature has created many things to keep mankind happy and flowers play a major role, but the lifetime of flowers is so short. Good thing, there are silk flowers; they are the next best thing. Silk flowers to be given as gifts are a novel way of gifting friends and loved ones beautiful flower arrangements that last forever.

Silk flowers are beautifully colored, authentic-looking floral imitations that come in a wide array of flower varieties. These silk flowers have progressed more and now have a fresh and realistic look. They are known to imitate their original counterparts very well and in many cases look better than the real thing.

What is referred today to as silk flowers, are not made with real silk but they are the blends of complex chemical composites like polyurethane, latex, more advanced polymers and synthetic or natural fabrics. They are used to decorate homes, offices, churches, for all holidays, special occasions and especially for funeral and grave decorations.

Silk flowers last a lifetime, they won’t wilt and die when being handled or manipulated into an arrangement or floral bouquet like real flowers and they endure hot and cold climates relatively well. No matter how much you neglect or ignore your silk flowers for months, they will remain as beautiful as the day you left. Today’s silk flowers are high quality and durable and require only a dusting on occasion. That is why floral designers find silk flowers very easy to work with because very little care has to be taken and mistakes can be easily rectified. For people who suffer from allergy, silk flowers are a beautiful and long lasting alternative to fresh flowers. Since silk flowers have looked more realistic than they ever have, they create the same feeling/mood as the real thing. And the best thing is that artificial silk flowers are always in season.

The biggest benefit of silk flowers is the cost; usually a silk flower bouquet will end up being considerably cheaper than a fresh flower bouquet. Brides who want to preserve their wedding flower bouquet as a reminder of the happy day often settle for silk flowers. Moreover, brides who want exotic or out-of-season wedding flowers often opt for silk flowers because they are much more readily available and silk flowers are also popular with brides who are allergic to the real ones.

Gerbera daisies make terrific presents for all sorts of happy events like birthdays and anniversaries, since they come in a broad assortment of varieties and hues and also vary in their significance. They make a perfect gift to cheer someone up as well, perhaps an invalid or somebody who is recovering from an illness. Just like a single rose can be given as a gift, so too can a single gerbera daisy, it can also be given along with a gift. Flower Gardening

By Lisa Bardford

Flower gardening is becoming more and more popular every day. Flowers can brighten everyone’s day, they smell nice, and are a great hobby. Flower gardening is simple, inexpensive, and loads of fun. Flower gardening can be done for yard decoration, simply as a hobby, or even professionally.

There are some decisions that have to be made before even flower gardening can be started. You must decide if you want annuals that live for one season and must be replanted every year, or perennials that survive the winter and return again in the summer. When buying and planting, pay attention to what kind of flowers thrive in your climate as well ass the sun requirements.
When flower gardening, you must decide what type of look you want before planting. For instance, mixing different heights, colors, and varieties of flowers together in a “wild-plant style” will give your garden a meadow look and can be very charming. If short flowers are planted in the front of your garden and work up to the tallest flowers in the back you will have a “stepping stone style”.

You can order seeds for flower gardening from catalogues or buy them from a nursery. Most people will go to the nursery and buy actual flowers and then transplant them. After you have prepared your garden area and bought flowers, it is a good idea to lay the flowers out in the bed to make sure you like the arrangement and that they will be spaced properly.
One of the easiest processes in flower gardening is the planting/ if you have seeds just sprinkle them around in the flower bed. For planting transplants dig a hole just bigger than the flower, pull the container off, and set the flower in the hole right side up. Cover it with the loose soil and press down firmly, then water.

Maintaining a flower garden is even easier than planting one. Although they might make it on their own, a bag of fertilizer applied in the early spring is a good idea. Pinch back any blooms after they start to fade and keep them good and watered. To save yourself work during the next season of flower gardening, rid your garden of all debris and spread out organic nutrients like peat moss or compost. Don’t forget to turn over the soil to properly mix in the fertilizer and rake smooth when finished. If you have perennials planted be careful not to disturb their roots in this process.

Flower gardening is as easy as 1, 2, and 3: simply decide what to plant; plant it, and water, water, water! Flower gardening is undoubtedly gaining in popularity and gives anyone excellent reason to spend some outdoors and test out their green thumb.

3 Flower Gardening Tips

By Ricky Lim

Flower gardening is a simple and rewarding hobby for many people. It does require hard work and dedication but the rewards are far better. Here are a few flower gardening tips that will keep your flower garden in tiptop condition and in the process enjoy yourself.

Flower Gardening Tip #1 : Planting

One of the most important steps in flower gardening is deciding where to do your planting. If you decide to plant it in a container, you can pretty much replicate the soil conditions you wanted. It is easier and much simpler to manage.

If you decide to plant it in your backyard, you should do a soil test first to determine the type of soil in your backyard. You can grab a test soil kit from your neighborhood gardening store which should be readily available.

Ideally, you want the soil to be composed of equal parts clay and sand. Too much of either clay or sand is not suitable for flower gardening. Clay does not drain well and roots cannot get hold easily in clay. Sand does not retain nutrients and elements well and does not hold together easily therefore it is impossible to grow flowers on sand.

Flower Gardening Tip #2 : Gardening Journal

A gardening journal can help you keep track of your flower garden progress and is recommended. With a gardening journal, you can keep track of the success and failure you have with the type of flowers you have grown in your pot or backyard. Doing so can reduce the amount of time you need to grow your next flower garden. You can use any notepad to keep track. There are even professional software available on the market that does this.

Flower Gardening Tip #3 : Organic Materials

All flowers require fertilizers to grow well. A suitable amount of organic matter or fertilizer in the soil makes it fertile and nutrient rich. It would be easier to grow flowers on such soil.

If your soil does not have much organic matter, it is still pretty easy to change the soil by adding compost to it. Compost is the remains of plants and animals and you can get it easily from your gardening supply store.

Compost provides nutrients and can help in drainage and hold moisture, conditions necessary for flower gardening.

There are other flower gardening tips as well but the above 3 flower gardening tips are in my opinion the most important to growing a flower garden.

Flower Garden - Tips for the Novice Gardener

By Hilary Basile

Have you started a flower garden but aren’t impressed with the results? Perhaps the flowers are wilting or you don’t like the way they are positioned. Following are some gardening tips to help you achieve the flower garden you envisioned:

Water in Moderation.

Determining how often to water your garden can be frustrating. Some decide to water their garden several times a day which can drown the plants, or create mold around the plants. It is best to lightly water your flowers every other day. Use a watering can or an attachment on a hose that simulates a light rain effect. No need to water your flowers on rainy days.

Give Your Flowers Room to Grow.

Do not plant flowers too close together. Avoid the impulse to purchase a plethora of flowers then plant them closely together. This will create them that become hybrids of each other. Make sure the ones you plant in your garden have enough room to grow to their full potential without growing into or overtaking other flowers around it. Consult your local garden center for thoughts about flowers that will work best together.

Get the Right Soil.

It’s not necessarily sufficient to plant flowers in the soil contained in your yard. Some soil doesn’t contain the nutrients flowers need to bloom healthily. Prior to planting your flowers, purchase some nutrient-rich soil and mix it with regular soil. Also, purchase nutrients and place it in some water to feed them with.

Use these gardening tips to achieve a stunning flower garden.

What Is Butterfly Gardening?

By Pauline Go

Butterfly gardening refers to growing flowers and plants that attract butterflies. These dainty and colorful creatures can make your garden look beautiful and delightful. However, if you have a cat, do not attempt this type of gardening as the cat will definitely hunt and kill the butterflies.

There is no fixed rule for developing a butterfly garden. You can pick a style that you like and ensure that you grow all sorts of flowers and plants that attract the butterflies you want around your home. The idea behind butterfly gardening is to attract the species of butterflies that live in your area. You can find information on this at the local library.

In addition to having flowers and plants to attract butterflies, you also need to have an environment to attract them. This means keeping water of some kind in the garden. The best is to have a birdbath so that butterflies do not go near the ground and you will also be protecting them from cats and naughty puppies. If you do not want a birdbath, you can hand a shallow dish of water on a tree or post.

Butterflies are attracted to flowers that have nectar rather than pollen. This means planting honeysuckle, milkweed, summer lilac, daisies, day lilies and lavender. Although butterflies are not particular about the color of flowers you want, you should try to coordinate the colors so that you garden does not look messy and chaotic with unrelated colors.

Many people when planning a butterfly garden prefer to come up with a plan so that they know exactly what the finished garden would look like. You can also do this if you think it will help you making a beautiful garden with myriads of flying butterflies.
