If you enjoy the outdoors and being close to nature, you probably have a beautiful garden, and are growing many different plants to add color to the outdoors. As you probably realize, gardening and caring for plants can be a great therapy method and it is free. Many plants require specialized care and attention, which is quite therapeutic.

Of course, there are man different kids of plants that you can grow in your own backyard or on your patio. One of the most popular plants, known for its outstanding beauty and color, is the orchid. Taking care of orchid flowers requires dedication, but there are several tips for growing orchid flowers that will bloom abundantly and beautifully. If you follow these tips, you will have a beautiful and thriving orchid plant collection.

To take care of your orchid plants, one of the most essential things you can do is to make sure that you have the right kind of light for them to grow. Successful orchid growing requires the right amount of light. The leaves and flowers of your orchid plant can actually be burned if there is too much light. Particularly when the flowers are in bloom, it is essential that they not receive direct sunlight. However, they will not thrive if they do not receive enough light, so you should make sure they do receive some filtered light.

Besides the right amount of light, you also need to ensure that your plants are kept at the right temperature. Plants like the Lady Palms can live for more than 100 years when provided with the right amount of light. The same goes for orchids. In order to grow beautiful orchid flowers, you need to pay attention to each plant’s individual needs. Some orchid plants have low temperature needs, and these plants can be kept on the floor or on shelves without any additional heating considerations. For those that require warm temperature, you can mount them on trunks of palms near curtained windows, or use an electric fan to circulate warm air near the plants.

When watering and fertilizing your orchid plants, it is again important to understand your plant’s individual needs. Many types of orchid plants require certain amounts of water and fertilizer, and there are optimum times of the day to water and fertilize your plants. Read any information that came with your plants, or consult a nursery salesperson for assistance in determining the right amounts for your plants. If you follow these instructions carefully, you will be able to cultivate a beautiful collection of orchid plants.

Exotic and tropical flowers and plants continue to grow in popularity amongst home decorators and garden hobbyists. They are some of the most beautiful and brilliant plants available and come in a huge variety of colors and textures. Some are almost alien in appearance and can mesmerize the beholder.

Entering your own tropical garden can be like leaving the world for a tropical paradise vacation. It’s no wonder this hobby is becoming so popular nowadays.

Raising tropical plants and flowers successfully requires dedication and work, but it is not difficult or laborious. In fact, it’s a lot of fun once you get started!

Outdoor or Indoor? If you live in a gardening zone lower than eight, you’ll probably not be able to grow your tropical plants outdoors full-time. Growers in these zones often keep their plants in portable containers so they can be moved in and out of doors to match the season and weather. Greenhouses are also popular for this area of growing.

If you live in a warmer climate, however, you can probably plant a tropical garden outside, permanently, and use mulch or other layers to shield the plants from the worst weather.

Containers The container you use will depend not only on your sense of style, but also on the size of the plant at maturity. Some plants get quite large, so a larger container will be needed. Often, growers will start a plant in a smaller container and move it up in size as the plant grows. This is fine if you have the time and expertise to do this properly. For most of us, though, this is a lot more work than we’re ready for, so choosing a large enough container to start with is best.

The drainage properties and water retention properties of the container are also important. Most tropical plants require lots of water and need that water to be retained, so a container without drainage is optimal. Other plants will require long dry spells followed by lots of water, so an appropriate pot should be considered there too.

Humidity If you’re in a dry zone and your plants require humidity to thrive, you’ll want to consider options to keep the air around the plants moist. A greenhouse usually does this quite readily, but a room in your house or growing in the back yard is not so accommodating. In these cases, you’ll want to consider misters, shrouds, and other options that can help the plant keep humidified.

Other plants, such as the moth orchids, will prefer it to be dry, so you’ll need to make sure they’re out of reach of lawn sprinklers, the watering of other plants, etc. A humidity level for moth orchids is ideally at 55-75%.

Many plants will adapt to considerable changes in their environment without too much problem, but knowing the needs of your tropicals is important if you want them to look their best. Caring for them is a work of love, though, and is enjoyable year-round. So try growing some exotic plants and escape to a tropical paradise!

There’s really nothing like having bright, fresh flowers delivered to your doorstep. Whether you order them yourself or they come from a friend or a lover, it`s something special to enjoy a carefully arranged bunch of blooms. But where do they all come from?

Large Floral Companies

The bigger florists that you find online usually have their own greenhouses where fresh flowers can be grown year round in a controlled climate. The most popular flowers will be cultivated in greater amounts to ensure they don`t run out, particularly with roses and carnations. However, these greenhouses often contain other flowers, as well, which may be more difficult to find. In many cases, the most delicate flowers are the ones that will be brought in from an outside source, if they are deemed too costly to grow on the property and not enough people buy them. These massive flower growing operations make it possible for flowers to be cut and sent anywhere in the country within hours. So, the flowers that end up on your doorstep are very, very fresh. However, this type of setup is usually only possible for those large companies that have a florist chain or a large online service with flower delivery options in major cities.

Fresh Flower Wholesalers

Not all florists are big enough to have their own greenhouses. In fact, some are little more than a website and some delivery specialists in every major city. That doesn`t stop them from providing beautiful, fresh flowers, though. Instead, these smaller florist shops turn to wholesalers who can sell them the flowers they need.

Flower wholesalers usually have enormous gardens and greenhouses where every description of flower can be cultivated. These fresh blooms are then harvested and sold by the bundle to florists and flower distributors around the country. The flowers are shipped in carefully refrigerated trucks so they are as fresh as possible upon arrival, since it`s pretty tough to sell.

Smaller florists usually stock up on the most ordered flowers, along with greenery and baby`s breath, but certain flowers may be special order. Orchids and more delicate blossoms will need to be ordered ahead of time to ensure that they have them in stock for the day you need them delivered. For this reason, when ordering fresh flowers, it`s always a good idea to call at least a couple of days in advance.

Freshness Affects Pricing

Fresh flowers are often more expensive during the winter since this is when it is most costly to heat the greenhouses in order to have the flowers flourish. The only other option for most florists is to import tropical flowers from another country, which is usually far too expensive to consider, when given the fairly low prices available at most florists.

Freshness does affect the pricing of flowers to a certain extent, but the type of flower and how hardy it is, will also figure into the price. For example, carnations and daisies tend to be the cheapest flowers available to the public and they are also the hardiest, able to grow in a range of temperatures and they don`t usually wilt for a while after being picked. This most certainly helps their price level!

Fresh flowers make a beautiful gift, especially for mother’s day, and special events, even if you are buying it for yourself. There`s really nothing nicer than a big bunch of bright birthday flowers to light up a room and fill it with their scent, which is why they have been a popular gift for centuries and will likely continue to be for many centuries more.

The climate, natural landscape and soil will play a large role when planting garden flowers in at your home. The types of flowers and plant as well as garden designs are endless so you will be sure to have an interesting and beautiful garden. Once you have accumulated ideas for you garden it is time to plan. You should make up a design as well as a budget, especially if you are planning on putting in an entire garden.

If you are planning a completely new garden or large renovation then you should construct a budget. Plants can be pricey and you need to see what you are capable of doing without going into debt. You need to figure in not only the plants, but equipment, and any labour or landscaping work you want done. The costs can quickly add up before you know what happened.

There are two types of gardening you can do, organic or using chemicals. With todays change towards environment friendly you can find many organic products that are not expensive making organic a much more attractive form of gardening. You need to be careful if you decide to use chemical products as they may have harmful side effects or eventually damage the soil.

Most beginners have no knowledge about planting flower gardens so don’t let that get you down. Your garden will evolve as your knowledge increases or tastes changes. It is very easy to fix plants and change things if you are unhappy with how it looks or your plants aren’t doing well.

It is important to have some sturdy gardening tools that will last. You also will need to prep your soil before planting as the majority of soils need a little help. Adding compost or manure to the soil helps to balance the pH as well as break down any clay spots that don’t drain well or help to solidify very sandy soils. You can obtain compost or manure from a gardening store, local farmer, or local horse of animal farm. If you are really ambitious you can create your own compost pile from food scraps.

No doubt, your garden will have areas of sun and shade. You will need to choose plants that excel in those types of conditions as certain plants grow well in the shade and others, like roses, need sun. Besides different flowers, shrubs and trees will also have preferred growing conditions and you should investigate this before buying and planting your flowers. With a little research and planning you will have a beautiful garden.

To get beautiful flowers and plant you need to learn how to plant bulbs correctly. Planting bulbs I fairly simple but if you don’t so a few important steps you may not get the results you want. You need to prepare the area you want your bulbs to produce an ideal underground environment for them to grow.

You should choose healthy bulbs. Bulbs that are mouldy or withered should not be planted. The size of the bulb is not too important but you may get more flowers from larger bulbs. You should set aside a sunny spot in your garden to plant bulbs as they prefer sunlight. If possible bulbs should receive about 6 hours of sun a day.

Bulbs can be planted anytime as long as the soil hasn’t frozen. You will need to plant your bulbs before winter. Bulbs need this cooler time so that when the weather warms they wake up. If you don’t get cool winter temperatures then you should purchase some pre-chilled bulbs. To get the most root growth you should plant your bulbs before November.

When planting bulbs remember that the pointed end goes up. This side is the stem. It may be hard to determine which end goes up depending on the shape of your bulb. Don’t worry your bulb will still grow it just may take a little more time for the stem to make it to the surface. Do to the sun and growth hormones the stem will always grow towards the surface and the roots in the earth.

Bulbs should not be planted too deep. You should dig a hole that is about 3 times deep the width of your bulb. Smaller bulbs should beat about 3-4 inches down and larger bulbs 6-8 inches. You can also add different growth products to stimulate root growth.

If you don’t have bulbs in the spring then they may have been eaten by animals. If this is a problem then grow your bulbs in a hardware cloth sack. The roots and stem can penetrate the cloth but the animal can’t get to the bulb. You can also sprinkle some red pepper with the bulb when you plant it or plant bulbs that animals don’t like, like daffodils.

Once you have planted your bulbs you only need to water them if you notice the season has been particularly dry. Once the spring has arrived you will be pleased with the small effort you took in planting your bulbs correctly and have a flowering feast for the eyes,

Annuals are a variety of plant which grows and blooms only once in its lifetime, meaning they must be replaced annually. While this certainly has its drawbacks, annuals also have many advantages over other plants like perennials. For one their cost is much less, being grown primarily from seeds which can produce thousands of plants with just a single packets of seeds. You’re also not restricted by having the exact same plants in your garden every year if you’d rather have a change of scenery each year. Their bloom period is quite long, and they’re also great for cutting.

One of their disadvantages is that they bloom much later than established perennials, so a bed filled with nothing but annuals will be quite devoid of life for the early part of the growing season. Having a nice mix of annuals and perennials in each bed is a good way to alleviate this problem. There are a good number of hardy annuals as well which can be planted in the fall so as to get an early start on spring, and these are another option when it comes to balancing out your beds. These hardy annuals include poppies, larkspur and cornflowers. If you decide against planting them in the fall, you can at least get a hard start on them early in the spring once the ground is suitable for planting.

For your less hardy annuals, getting them started in seed pots early in March is a good plan of action. Otherwise you may be forced to wait a good month or more until all risk of frost has disappeared. First make sure to carefully pulverize your seedbed with a rake before planting and eliminate all lumps.

Once your seeds have been placed and lightly covered with soil you can gently tamp down the soil above them. Leave a stake in the ground, with some sort of identifying mark or sign to remind you which plant is in that spot. Small flower seed plants should be placed no more than an inch beneath the surface, while larger plants such as sunflowers should be planted to a greater depth, and from two to four feet apart.

Annuals are most often planted in rows, which can speed up the process when planting multiple plants, and gives them a nice alignment when they emerge from the earth. To do this, dig a shallow trench, again not more than one inch deep for flower seeds. This can either be done with a trowel or your hands. You can now fill it with seeds. Go ahead and leave more than you might think is necessary, you can always trim out any excess plants later. Thinning will likely be required at some point anyway to ensure each plant has sufficient room, so unless you’re really cautious on the seeding, this will be a required task at some point.

Before transplanting any plants from a pot to the ground, you should expose them to outside air for stretches of time beforehand to help get them acclimated in the landscape. The soil in the pot should also be used in its new location, which gardeners and landscapers rarely do in gardening and landscape preparation. If you can hold off on the transplanting until a cool and damp day, these are ideal weather conditions for this process. If the ground is dry be sure to water it both before and after transplantation. If you must transplant on a sunny day, set up some sort of barrier to provide the plant with shade. Once the plants are established these barriers can be removed.

by Kent Higgins

Biennials are usually very stunning plants with a good number of attractive flowers. They are somewhat troublesome for the gardener, since they do not bloom until their second year. Their great advantage is that their seeding stage produces new plants, which will bloom again two years later, making it unnecessary to plant additional seeds.

Most people are unaware that biennials are called biennials because of the fact that they form new plants every two years. Some gardeners are shocked when the witness the new growth because they were unaware that this phenomenon would take place. What a pleasant surprise for the novice gardener!

The biennials are usually planted in early summer and transplanted to high-quality soil when they are big enough to handle. It is a good thought to pot them at this time, particularly in logistical areas where plants can’t be left outdoors in winter. In some cases, they can be transplanted to a cold frame, and then placed in the flowerbed the following spring.

Careful soil preparation is essential to biennials as well as annuals. After planting, if you want an uninterrupted growth of new plants, it is best not to weed and cultivate too persistently. If a really persnickety biennial patch is planted, it will be essential to swap the plants with new ones each year.

Perennials are the fundamental flowers in most any garden. Each year they die and renew themselves for the next growing season. They are long-lived and last for many seasons. Most novice gardeners, or gardeners who don’t harbor a passion for continuously working with their plants, have a great affection for perennials because of their long-lasting properties.

Perennials are also among our oldest plants. They have been refined for centuries and often, as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, bear no semblance to their wild ancestors. In some perennials, the blossoms have become so specialized through centuries of cultivation that they no longer produce seeds.

Amateur botanists and gardeners are continually developing other perennials. As an effect of this cultivation and in breeding, perennials are not as resilient as other varieties. Another drawback is the inclination of certain perennials to die down after flowering, thereby leaving gaps in the garden.

Whether you are an avid gardener and love spending time working with your outdoor plants, or you’re a weekend warrior who does the bare minimum to get the look you desire, you will likely have an appreciation for flowers. Just like a wireless rock speaker, they add a beautiful touch of color to every garden. The big decision is the type of flowering plant to choose.

No matter which plant type you prefer, there are advantages as well as drawbacks. But, because flowers add such a pleasant esthetic to your garden, you will likely spend more time focused on the advantages.

It has been a few days since I have found just the tool shed plans that I was on the lookout for. I had always wanted to construct a shed to keep my gear but was not really aware of how to go about building one. It is not that I have not done any maintenance work at home. Of course I have and have in fact also built a porch with a cousin who is a contractor. Constructing a building, no matter how simple in build and design it was, was something that I found to be quite a daunting task.

But once I sat down and looked at the tool shed plans, I realized that it was something that I could really do. It would be no particular difficulty for me to make this building - on the contrary, it was quite within my ability.

For a while, I had been almost willing to put aside my tool shed plans in favor of building a pre-fab shed, but I am glad that I dispensed with that idea. It is not that there are no good pre-made buildings available. On the contrary, it is quite possible to by a ready made shed from any number of companies, or a kit that can be easily assembled. The problem is a matter of self-respect.

If you can not build your own tool shed, how will your friends respect you and your construction skills? What business do you have that many tools if you have no idea of how to use them to build your tool shed plans? You do not, and if you buy a tool shed, all your friends will make fun of you - at least that is what I always believed, and still do.

In some ways, I have already started building from my tool shed plans. I have gone out into my yard and planned the perfect spot - in the back corner of the yard where the kids won’t get into it, and where it is out of the way. I have even measured out the site exactly, and started to get materials. I am lucky enough to already have a lot of the materials that are required to build a tool shed. I have most of the boards stored up in my garage, plenty of nails, and saws of all kinds. Now, all I need is the big support beams and I will be all ready to put my tool shed plans to work.

Nothing brings a smile on someone’s face that you specially care about than the sight and smell of fresh, colorful, and wonderfully arranged flowers. Flowers whether silk flower or fresh flowers are a simple and sincere way to lift our spirits, their presence has a profound impact on ones state of mind and emotions. They say all that you can’t ever tell, they have charm that inspires and expresses inside sentiments of heart.

Flowers are an integral part of the most memorable events of our life, be it weddings, birthdays, births, funerals, anniversaries, graduations, and the likes. From these flowers we can send messages of sympathy, gratitude, congratulations, love and even get well flowers. They can make an even greater impact of love and affection when there is absolutely no occasion attached.

Christmas flowers will look beautiful above the fireplace or mantle. You can choose from the most exquisite wedding flowers for the wedding flower arrangements and wedding flower bouquet. You can also give flowers to your special someone during valentines or anniversaries. If you are planning to have a party you may want to use flowers, similarly a birthday floral bouquet is a perfect birthday gift. Sending appropriate funeral flowers is a will mean a lot to the bereaved family. When sending flowers great care needs to be exercised in selecting them and you should also consider the occasion for sending flowers and the person for whom the flowers will be sent.

Aside from being a great present and decoration, a recent study conducted at Rutgers University, the State University of New Jersey, offers scientific proof that flowers do improve our emotional health. First, flowers do provide happiness, surely a necessity for our emotional well-being. Second, the impact of flowers is positive and long-term. Lastly, flowers help to enable connections between people.

Before, flowers are commonly available in the flower shop. These flower shops carry an impressive array of flowers that cater to what their customers want. These shops would stock flowers like Lobster Claws, Ostrich Ginger Plume flowers, Monkey’s tails with different varieties of waxy orchids, roses like the black rose, and other rose hybrids and you could also purchase some of the other normal flowers like the different varieties of roses, small moss roses, gladioli, bunches of daises, tulips, daffodils and others. However, with the rise in the Internet sector, advancement has taken place, so now you can opt for online flower delivery.

When you search online, there are many sites that have fantastic floral arrangement and bouquets. You can look at the vast selection of flowers on these online flower stores and then choose which ones you want. Roses, tulips, carnations, chrysanthemums, daisies, sunflowers, violets, lilies, calendulas, and many more are all available arranged in beautifully designed floral bouquets and sometimes you can buy flower arrangements online with dainty figurines like fairies or ceramic frogs. When you are thinking of purchasing your flowers in this manner you should look at the various flower shops that are online so that you will develop an idea of the different services that are available. You have to make a comparison between the different companies offering online flower delivery services to be able to select the best and fastest flower service suitable according to your need.

It is a good idea to work with a florist when choosing flowers because they are able to show different displays and arrangement that can stimulate ideas, which can turn out to be very unique and in a lot of situations fit into the budget you are working with. A great way to choose a florist is by simple ‘word of mouth’; a florist that creates an impressive floral design usually makes a habit of repeating good work. You can ask family members, friends or co-workers for florist recommendations. You should also ask about affiliations with other florist organizations. Affiliations often mean that certain minimum standards must be met; a florist may have affiliations with organizations such as the Society of American Florists and national wire services such as FTD florists or Teleflora. The umbrella company will then forward your order on to a member florist in your locale.

Flowers are really simply amazing because of their charm, beauty, grace, and the great impact they have on people’s heart. They are an easy and affordable way to bring a smile to someone you love or rejuvenate yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. These beautiful flowers will add a splash of color to your life and truly reach your soul.

When I was just barely in my twenties, I rented a small house in San Francisco, just two blocks from the beach. The house was modest and plain, but had a small front yard with little else growing besides an abundance of cineraria, a lovely perennial with purple-magenta daisy like flowers. My house had a porch and two windows facing the street, under which were a couple of dilapidated window box planters, with nothing inside of them, not even dirt. I found my new house to be charming. Not having enjoyed the luxury of a garden in previous third-story Victorian apartments, I was delighted at this diamond in the rough. It just needed a little TLC to make it come alive.

My first improvement was filling up those window box planters. Even though, my budget matched the appearance of the house, I did want the best results for my money. Naturally, I began with the window boxes, by adding some potting soil and a few flowers. Now I was in business.

Daffodils and tulips first sprang to mind, since it was early winter when I took up residency. These flowers were easily planted to add lots of spring colors to enjoy in a few months. Visualizing a burst of sunshiny colors surrounding the front door was a cinch. I quickly set my mind for planning the summer flowers for my window box planters, shortly after I planted my bulbs. However, the San Francisco beach area is fairly restrictive when considering various plant life. What with fog, fog and even more fog, the climate was considerably more depressing when you consider that everything about the house was gray. Yes, gray walls, gray roof and even gray window planter boxes. Those before me, I decided had absolutely no imagination at all.

I decided to use magenta paint for the front door, the trim and the window boxes. It looked so much better! While this also made the cineraria stand out very nicely, while livening up the houses exterior, considerably.

I was thrilled beyond measure as the daffodils and tulips began surfacing and coming into bloom, yes, I even talked to them. I had already been planning for the summer and fall, the flowers I would plant in my amazing colored window box planter. When the time came, I delicately began to interplant begonias, magenta and purple fuchsias in between each of the bulbs and then chose some dark turquoise trailing lobelias for good measure. These new flowers were well underway, by the time summer took the bulbs. All these flowers thrived in such a moist and darkened environment. For even more color I chose a variegated coleus. My visitors found this as charming as I did, while they complimented its beautiful display of colors.

Eventually, fall became winter and pink, white and red cyclamens quickly replaced the summer flowers. I brought my begonias inside to wait out the winter in pots. However, ferns and spider plants began taking over the underside of the roof of the porch, as they hung from their hooks, so reminiscent of delightful ballroom belles. It is interestingly amazing how much difference a couple of four foot window box planters can give a house such wonderful curb appeal.
