Great Window Sitters from Flowering Plants

by Kent Higgins

Annuals are a variety of plant which grows and blooms only once in its lifetime, meaning they must be replaced annually. While this certainly has its drawbacks, annuals also have many advantages over other plants like perennials. For one their cost is much less, being grown primarily from seeds which can produce thousands of plants with just a single packets of seeds. You’re also not restricted by having the exact same plants in your garden every year if you’d rather have a change of scenery each year. Their bloom period is quite long, and they’re also great for cutting.

One of their disadvantages is that they bloom much later than established perennials, so a bed filled with nothing but annuals will be quite devoid of life for the early part of the growing season. Having a nice mix of annuals and perennials in each bed is a good way to alleviate this problem. There are a good number of hardy annuals as well which can be planted in the fall so as to get an early start on spring, and these are another option when it comes to balancing out your beds. These hardy annuals include poppies, larkspur and cornflowers. If you decide against planting them in the fall, you can at least get a hard start on them early in the spring once the ground is suitable for planting.

For your less hardy annuals, getting them started in seed pots early in March is a good plan of action. Otherwise you may be forced to wait a good month or more until all risk of frost has disappeared. First make sure to carefully pulverize your seedbed with a rake before planting and eliminate all lumps.

Once your seeds have been placed and lightly covered with soil you can gently tamp down the soil above them. Leave a stake in the ground, with some sort of identifying mark or sign to remind you which plant is in that spot. Small flower seed plants should be placed no more than an inch beneath the surface, while larger plants such as sunflowers should be planted to a greater depth, and from two to four feet apart.

Annuals are most often planted in rows, which can speed up the process when planting multiple plants, and gives them a nice alignment when they emerge from the earth. To do this, dig a shallow trench, again not more than one inch deep for flower seeds. This can either be done with a trowel or your hands. You can now fill it with seeds. Go ahead and leave more than you might think is necessary, you can always trim out any excess plants later. Thinning will likely be required at some point anyway to ensure each plant has sufficient room, so unless you’re really cautious on the seeding, this will be a required task at some point.

Before transplanting any plants from a pot to the ground, you should expose them to outside air for stretches of time beforehand to help get them acclimated in the landscape. The soil in the pot should also be used in its new location, which gardeners and landscapers rarely do in gardening and landscape preparation. If you can hold off on the transplanting until a cool and damp day, these are ideal weather conditions for this process. If the ground is dry be sure to water it both before and after transplantation. If you must transplant on a sunny day, set up some sort of barrier to provide the plant with shade. Once the plants are established these barriers can be removed.

The Benefits of Growing Perennial Plants

by Kent Higgins

Biennials are usually very stunning plants with a good number of attractive flowers. They are somewhat troublesome for the gardener, since they do not bloom until their second year. Their great advantage is that their seeding stage produces new plants, which will bloom again two years later, making it unnecessary to plant additional seeds.

Most people are unaware that biennials are called biennials because of the fact that they form new plants every two years. Some gardeners are shocked when the witness the new growth because they were unaware that this phenomenon would take place. What a pleasant surprise for the novice gardener!

The biennials are usually planted in early summer and transplanted to high-quality soil when they are big enough to handle. It is a good thought to pot them at this time, particularly in logistical areas where plants can’t be left outdoors in winter. In some cases, they can be transplanted to a cold frame, and then placed in the flowerbed the following spring.

Careful soil preparation is essential to biennials as well as annuals. After planting, if you want an uninterrupted growth of new plants, it is best not to weed and cultivate too persistently. If a really persnickety biennial patch is planted, it will be essential to swap the plants with new ones each year.

Perennials are the fundamental flowers in most any garden. Each year they die and renew themselves for the next growing season. They are long-lived and last for many seasons. Most novice gardeners, or gardeners who don’t harbor a passion for continuously working with their plants, have a great affection for perennials because of their long-lasting properties.

Perennials are also among our oldest plants. They have been refined for centuries and often, as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, bear no semblance to their wild ancestors. In some perennials, the blossoms have become so specialized through centuries of cultivation that they no longer produce seeds.

Amateur botanists and gardeners are continually developing other perennials. As an effect of this cultivation and in breeding, perennials are not as resilient as other varieties. Another drawback is the inclination of certain perennials to die down after flowering, thereby leaving gaps in the garden.

Whether you are an avid gardener and love spending time working with your outdoor plants, or you’re a weekend warrior who does the bare minimum to get the look you desire, you will likely have an appreciation for flowers. Just like a wireless rock speaker, they add a beautiful touch of color to every garden. The big decision is the type of flowering plant to choose.

No matter which plant type you prefer, there are advantages as well as drawbacks. But, because flowers add such a pleasant esthetic to your garden, you will likely spend more time focused on the advantages.

You Should Have a Toolshed. Why? The Environment, Organization, and a Secret Hide-Away.

by Dane Masters

It has been a few days since I have found just the tool shed plans that I was on the lookout for. I had always wanted to construct a shed to keep my gear but was not really aware of how to go about building one. It is not that I have not done any maintenance work at home. Of course I have and have in fact also built a porch with a cousin who is a contractor. Constructing a building, no matter how simple in build and design it was, was something that I found to be quite a daunting task.

But once I sat down and looked at the tool shed plans, I realized that it was something that I could really do. It would be no particular difficulty for me to make this building - on the contrary, it was quite within my ability.

For a while, I had been almost willing to put aside my tool shed plans in favor of building a pre-fab shed, but I am glad that I dispensed with that idea. It is not that there are no good pre-made buildings available. On the contrary, it is quite possible to by a ready made shed from any number of companies, or a kit that can be easily assembled. The problem is a matter of self-respect.

If you can not build your own tool shed, how will your friends respect you and your construction skills? What business do you have that many tools if you have no idea of how to use them to build your tool shed plans? You do not, and if you buy a tool shed, all your friends will make fun of you - at least that is what I always believed, and still do.

In some ways, I have already started building from my tool shed plans. I have gone out into my yard and planned the perfect spot - in the back corner of the yard where the kids won’t get into it, and where it is out of the way. I have even measured out the site exactly, and started to get materials. I am lucky enough to already have a lot of the materials that are required to build a tool shed. I have most of the boards stored up in my garage, plenty of nails, and saws of all kinds. Now, all I need is the big support beams and I will be all ready to put my tool shed plans to work.

Window Box Planters - Maximum Curb Appeal With Minimum Expense

by Joe Boyd

When I was just barely in my twenties, I rented a small house in San Francisco, just two blocks from the beach. The house was modest and plain, but had a small front yard with little else growing besides an abundance of cineraria, a lovely perennial with purple-magenta daisy like flowers. My house had a porch and two windows facing the street, under which were a couple of dilapidated window box planters, with nothing inside of them, not even dirt. I found my new house to be charming. Not having enjoyed the luxury of a garden in previous third-story Victorian apartments, I was delighted at this diamond in the rough. It just needed a little TLC to make it come alive.

My first improvement was filling up those window box planters. Even though, my budget matched the appearance of the house, I did want the best results for my money. Naturally, I began with the window boxes, by adding some potting soil and a few flowers. Now I was in business.

Daffodils and tulips first sprang to mind, since it was early winter when I took up residency. These flowers were easily planted to add lots of spring colors to enjoy in a few months. Visualizing a burst of sunshiny colors surrounding the front door was a cinch. I quickly set my mind for planning the summer flowers for my window box planters, shortly after I planted my bulbs. However, the San Francisco beach area is fairly restrictive when considering various plant life. What with fog, fog and even more fog, the climate was considerably more depressing when you consider that everything about the house was gray. Yes, gray walls, gray roof and even gray window planter boxes. Those before me, I decided had absolutely no imagination at all.

I decided to use magenta paint for the front door, the trim and the window boxes. It looked so much better! While this also made the cineraria stand out very nicely, while livening up the houses exterior, considerably.

I was thrilled beyond measure as the daffodils and tulips began surfacing and coming into bloom, yes, I even talked to them. I had already been planning for the summer and fall, the flowers I would plant in my amazing colored window box planter. When the time came, I delicately began to interplant begonias, magenta and purple fuchsias in between each of the bulbs and then chose some dark turquoise trailing lobelias for good measure. These new flowers were well underway, by the time summer took the bulbs. All these flowers thrived in such a moist and darkened environment. For even more color I chose a variegated coleus. My visitors found this as charming as I did, while they complimented its beautiful display of colors.

Eventually, fall became winter and pink, white and red cyclamens quickly replaced the summer flowers. I brought my begonias inside to wait out the winter in pots. However, ferns and spider plants began taking over the underside of the roof of the porch, as they hung from their hooks, so reminiscent of delightful ballroom belles. It is interestingly amazing how much difference a couple of four foot window box planters can give a house such wonderful curb appeal.

House Plant Success - Research Your Plant Choices Well

by Keith Markensen

The natural benefits of plants in an office or home are many. They provide a great decorative touch to those lonely stretches of unpopulated floor, table or desk space, they improve the air quality of the room, and have a naturally uplifting presence that calms and soothes those who look upon them.

These are but a few of the reasons why every home and office space should be outfitted with any number of plants. Yet before you go turning your home into a leafy, jungle paradise that oozes atmosphere you should observe the following pointers and tips on some of the plant varieties you may feel inclined to add to your abode.

Firstly, as beautiful and innocent as most plants appear, many have an unknown danger lurking in the tips of its leafy tendrils that can potentially be very dangerous or even deadly to both animals and children. Some plants when consumed or even touched can cause severe illness. One of most popular poisonous plants is ivy, with philodendron another popular choice that is potentially harmful.

Any household that includes children and/or pets either living there or visiting even infrequently needs to have its plant life chosen with care. Researching beforehand the potential dangers a plant may hold, the symptoms they are likely to cause upon consumption, and the quickest and most effective remedy should that occur are all vital. Maintaining constant supervision over children and pets in areas where these plants exist is important, though ensuring they’re out of reach is even more so.

Kids are ingenious though, and if that pretty plant catches their eye, you can be sure they’ll devise a clever way to reach it and take a closer look, so don’t let your guard down even when you feel a plant is out of their reach.

Aside from the potential dangers of plants, when choosing any plant for your home it’s important to identify which area of the house that plant will reside, and the amount of sunlight it is likely to receive there. Hiding a plant that requires plenty of sunlight in a dark corner will ensure it does develop well, though you can remedy this by moving it into a sunny spot for at least a few hours each day. Putting your indoor plants outdoors for a few hours on nice days is a great way for them to get sunlight and air.

Another factor that can influence plant growth is the temperature of the room or area it’s located in. Some plants thrive in warmer climates, while others may require cooler temperatures. Most need a nice moderate environment though, so if you stick it in a cool basement, or a stifling room in the summer, they may not grow as desired.

As a general rule of caring for house plants - flowering plants will require more sunlight to feed their growth than other types of plants. Tropical plants will do better in an environment with moist air, while cacti will thrive in the areas with dry air, those resilient plants should be able to survive even in conditions not ideally suited to them.
